Inception, rightfully named too, the way the movie is made, absolutely stunning, just the sheer think-factor.
The movie makes my brain actually do some work once in a while, unlike most films, which generally just make you sit there and then comes the “shock and awe” then it finishes like a cliche, good guys win, bad guys lose, girl finds man, man gets girl, yada yada, etc. etc.
Inception is different, yes the end is a bit cliche, but kind of surprising, the way that the camera shuts down just as the spinning top appears to be stopping, but this seems to me that it is leaving the scene open for another movie.
Inception, like many people have been saying, Should be called “Confusion” because of the fact that the movie is so downright confusing, when personally i found it quite straight forward, the lapse between dreams… If i may, i will elaborate.
1st Layer: The dream as its normal state, this is the state that eventually everyone who is in the dream can escape by means of waking up.
2nd Layer: This is the dream inside another dream, this is slightly harder to wake up from, or escape as the invader/creator of the dream(s) have to be “Kicked”, or alternatively wake up in the first layer of dreaming.
3rd Layer: By now you may realise this goes on by sets, the people in the 3rd layer must first be “kicked” from the 2nd layer, at approximately the same time as the person in the 2nd layer is being kicked, this is where the term “Ride the kicks back up” comes from, they must take each kick in a matter of seconds.
Layers: Continue in this fashion
There is a degree of danger in all these layers, the further down you go, the closer you get to your subconscious, that of your brain’s thoughts and mind processes you cannot control. And if you happen to be sedated enough during the time in reality, and die in a further layer toward the subconscious, you are trapped in “Limbo” or where no thought exists, until enough time has passed down in limbo so that you wake up naturally back in reality, this can take decades dependent on which part of the subconscious you are trapped in.
There are a few elements i can see would be potentially confusing for the viewers, such as the question i was asked about, who was the Asian guy at the beginning, well he was Saito (Ken Watanabe), who was in the movie basically the entire time as Cobb’s (Leonardo DiCaprio), well, we will call it “Business Partner”. Toward the beginning another potential confusion is why Cobb, is in Saito’s dream, why he was there, unless you picked up from the beginning that Cobb was picking up various jobs for money, you wouldn’t have realised that he was in there to Extract (Steal) information from Saito. When Saito realised Cobb was a good liability, he tracked him down, and offered him the job, one he could not decline.
Here are a few terms you may find interesting [In Relation to Movie]:
Inception: The Creation or Beginning of something (Thought, or otherwise)
Extraction: The Attaining or Extracting of Information or ideas from one person’s mind.
In inception there are a few people in Cobb’s and Saito’s Team, they consist of:
-The Architect: The person who designs the dream on the basis of the other persons memories.
- i believe one is called “The Writer“: a Person who using the other’s subconscious can choose to look like and imitate anyone they know or knew.
The Music in inception is used to signal the people in further layers, when the kick is coming, this is a very useful tactic as it gives them a good point in time, whereas otherwise they would be guessing, as the were in the first few scenes, where they were in the double dream.
Some people may find it difficult to understand how there are all these people walking around while in the dream-space, but explained again in the movie, not only by action but by word, is the thought that these are projections of people that are in the person’s subconscious; who they met, where they met them, what they look, sound and act like. This puts a whole new spin on the movie as it adds the factor of people in the actual dream itself. The projections, being part of the subconscious, act for it, as it is unable to be controlled by the mind itself, this means that when someone tampers with a dream enough to make it seems un-realistic to somebody, and they realise they are dreaming, the subconscious, like white blood cells [As Explained] attack intruders in the dream-world of that person, unless they are specifically planted there, and divert the person’s attention to a more prominent thought.
The elevator scene where Ariadne delves into Cobb’s mind, this was as she said, a “Prison” for his memories of Mal [Marion Cotillard], this is where Cobb tried to construct a space of where he held memories and thoughts of her, so that she would not be able to move into his other dreams, where he was invading other minds. She initially doesn’t, but eventually makes it through to the 3rd layer of Maurice Fisher’s [Pete Postlethwaite] Dream state. And Shoots him into the Subconscious, so that Cobb will follow her down there. He does, and realises that he cannot leave her, because they have a deal, then Saito gets killed and lost in the subconscious because he dies in the 3rd layer, while the powerful sedatives are in action. Therefore Cobb decides to stay, and after searching, finds Saito, in his subconscious, and with the realisation to both of them that the world they are in is not real, they both finally return to Reality, skipping each layer, because of the fact that time has probably run out.
finally, i will leave with the expression of time in the dream world:
Reality: 1 minute = 1 minute
1st Layer: 5 minutes (Reality) = 1 Hour
2nd Layer: 1 Hour (1st Layer) = 48 Hours
3rd Layer: 48 Hours (2nd Layer) = Approximately 1 year
Subconscious: 1 year (3rd Layer) = Approximately 50 years
In the subconscious state, the reason they say their brains get turned to mush after is that because of the amount of time spent in limbo, people forget what is real, and reality isn’t enough, and like Cobb’s wife, they either turn into mindless vegetables, or are forced to kill themselves out of either sheer annoyance they cannot control the real world, or the thought they are still dreaming.
These are my thoughts, Whats yours?
